Interlibrary Loan Guide: Novanet Express

A guide to interlibrary loan policies and procedures at NSCAD

Who Can Use Novanet Express?

Novanet Express is restricted to registered Novanet library patrons (faculty, staff and students of member institutions and Nova Scotia residents who are 18 years of age or older). If you would like to register as a Novanet patron, and have not already done so, please visit our Circulation Desk. 

Patrons place requests using the Novanet (Primo) catalogue. Novanet Express is used solely for requesting material held by members of the Novanet consortium. 

Placing a Request

Search  Novanet (Primo)

LOG IN: You will need to sign in to place a Novanet Express request. Select Sign In at the top right of the search page. You will be prompted to enter your barcode. For NSCAD faculty, staff and students, this is found on the back of your NSCAD ID. Off-Campus borrowers can find their barcode on the front of their Novanet or public library card. The password is usually the last four digits of your phone number. Please contact the Circulation Desk if you encounter problems signing in. 

BOOKS: Once signed in to your account, search the catalogue to find the item that you wish to request. Click on the title. Under the Get It heading, click on the Place a Hold link. Choose the desired pickup location. You may also add any notes if desired at this point. Click on the Send Request link. 

COPIES: Once signed into your account, search for the item in the catalogue; from the results list, click on the desired title. Under the Document Delivery & More heading, click on Click here for more options. Click on Request Item Via Document Delivery. Sign into the request form using your library card barcode and password (the same as you logged into your Novanet account). Fill in any further information you have about the item, especially an ISBN or ISSN. Change the pickup location if desired. Accept the copyright statement at the bottom of the request. Click on Submit. You will be notified by email when a PDF of your document is available. 

Don't forget to sign out after you've finished placing your request(s)!

A NOTE ON PHOTOCOPY REQUESTS:  Copyright law prohibits excess photocopying, generally held to be more than 10% or one chapter of a book, or more one article from a particular journal issue.

Is there any charge for this service?

No, this service is free for Novanet patrons.

How long will my request take to arrive?

Generally, requested material arrives within 3-5 days.

How long do I have to pick the item up?

Material will be held for 7 days from arrival. 

How do I cancel a request?

Please contact our Interlibrary Loans Technician, Detta Morrison-Phillips ( or 902-494-8255). She will notify the lending library that you wish to cancel your request. Please note that the option to cancel a request from within your Novanet account will not alert the lending library that you wish to cancel the request. 

What if the item I want is currently on loan?

Placing a hold will ensure that you are in queue for the next available copy.  You could also ask about placing an interlibrary loan request for the item, as that may be more expedient. Please contact Detta Morrison-Phillips ( or 902-494-8255) for more information.

How will I know when my requested material arrives, and where do  pick it up?

You will be notified by email that the item has arrived. You can pick it up at the NSCAD Library Circulation Desk. 

Can I request articles or excerpts to be delivered in print?

Photocopy requests are, by default, available in PDF format. If you would prefer a print copy, please change Delivery Method on the Relais form from Email Link to Pickup. Print copies generally take longer to arrive.
